Centre for Human Settlements and Urban Development.

Centre for Human Settlements and Urban Development (CHSUD) was established in 2003 by the University in collaboration with UN-Habitat, Nairobi Kenya to assist in Nigerian Development Planning in the area of Human Settlements, Development and Management, Urban Governance and Sustainable Urban Development. The main function of the Centre is to undertake training programmes related to Sustainable Urban Development and Governance in order to assist States and Local Governments in their manpower development; programme development; project implementation; and monitoring and evaluation. It also participates in teaching functions of the University where appropriate.

The aim and objectives of CHSUD amongst other things includes:-

  • To assist in Nigerian Development Planning in the area of Human Settlements, Urban Governance and Urban Development;
  • To undertake training programmes related to (a) above in order to assist particular States and Local Governments in their manpower development; Programme development; project implementation; and enhancing internal revenue generation;
  • To conduct conferences, seminars, workshops, etc. and such other activities as may contribute to the overall functions of the Centre and dissemination of research results;
  • Participate in teaching functions of the University, where appropriate;
  • Carryout research on all aspects of human settlements, urban governance and urban environmental management;
  • Provide technical advisory services as well as conduct research for state and the local governments on human settlements, urban governance and urban environmental management;
  • To collaborate with the Federal Ministries of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, and Inter-governmental Affairs, in the areas of research, technical advisory services and project implementation;
  • Participate in the supervision of the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the performance of UN-HABITAT Programmes in the country on behalf of the Habitat Programme Support Office (HAPSO);
  • Facilitate the sharing of practical experience and Best Practices among Nigerian cities and between them and others in different parts of the world;
  • Provide facilities for the training of Nigerians at all levels – diploma, graduate and post graduate- in all aspects of Municipal Administration, Human Settlements, Urban Governance and Urban Environmental Management;
  • Set up a Data Bank on human settlements, urban management and urban governance;
  • To establish a laboratory/workshop for Environmental Management Information System (EMIS).
VISION

The Vision of CHSUD is to facilitate, through action research and technical advisory service, the development of self-sustaining cities that are competitive, harmonious, livable and vibrant, whose guiding principles are human dignity, justice and citizenship.

MISSION

The Mission of CHSUD is to generate, disseminate and exchange information between Cities and Local Governments aimed at institutionalizing good governance, transparency and accountability at State and Local Government levels.

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy of the Centre is the provision of facilities for the training of Nigerians at all levels Diploma, Certificates, Post-graduate in all aspects of Municipal Administration, Human Settlements, Urban Governance and Urban Environmental Management.
